Welcome to the NOAA Satellite Air Quality Proving Ground (AQPG) Webpage!

The Satellite AQPG is preparing the air quality community for the new generation of aerosol satellite products from the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the GOES-R series of geostationary satellites and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument on the  JPSS series of polar-orbiting satellites.  The Satellite AQPG began in 2010, and it is a subset of the overall NOAA Proving Ground (PG).

The goals of the Satellite AQPG are to:

  1. Demonstrate VIIRS and ABI air quality related products in near real-time
  2. Train the air quality community on the use of the products, with a focus on operational users
  3. Work with the air quality community to evaluate the products and provide constructive feedback to algorithm/product developers on the value and needed changes to the products, in order to increase their utility for operational and retrospective air quality applications

To achieve these goals, the Satellite AQPG team is conducting a variety of training, outreach, and research tasks. The expected outcome of the project is a fully informed and capable user community.
