Terra is a polar-orbiting satellite with a descending orbit and a late morning equatorial overpass time (~10:30 AM local time). Terra was the first satellite to look at Earth system science, collecting observations of Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, land, snow and ice, and energy budget. Terra was launched in 1999 and carries five instruments, including MODIS.
